Scissor Lift Hire

Scissor lifts are a practical choice for painting, maintenance, fit-out and light installation work where you need a stable platform at height. MachinesAfrica Rentals supplies well maintained units from Germiston and our depots across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape for short or long term hire.

What a scissor lift is and why sites choose it

A scissor lift is a powered access platform that rises straight up on a folding support frame. It gives workers a level deck for tools, materials and two or more people depending on the model, which makes it useful for steady work at height rather than jobs that need sideways reach. On a construction site, factory floor or shopping centre, that vertical lift saves time compared with scaffolding when you are moving between bays, ceiling lines or wall sections.

These units are used on stable, firm ground and are best suited to flat slabs, paved yards and completed floors. If your work is in a warehouse, retail shell, plant room or around finished services where floor loading matters, we can help match the right machine to the surface and the height you need.

Our team in Germiston supports clients in Johannesburg, Midrand, Pretoria East, Boksburg, Durban, Pinetown, Cape Town and Bellville, with site deliveries and same day dispatch on selected orders. For larger projects we also assist with long term hire and plant swop-outs if your scope changes mid job.

Sizes, platform heights and working options

We supply different scissor lift sizes so you can match the machine to the task instead of over hiring. Smaller electric units are common for indoor maintenance, while larger diesel models are used outdoors where ground conditions and reach requirements are tougher. Platform height is the main figure to check, but working height, deck size and machine width all matter on site.

  • Compact electric units for indoor access and narrow aisles
  • Mid size platforms for ceiling work, ducting and services install
  • Larger rough terrain models for outdoor construction and cladding
  • Wide deck options for two workers plus tools and materials
  • Models with extendable deck sections for a little extra reach

As a guide, many projects use lifts with working heights between 6 m and 18 m, while heavier outdoor jobs may call for higher capacity units with stronger tyres and greater platform space. If your site has narrow doorways, low headroom or lift shafts nearby, tell us early so we can check access before dispatch.

Where scissor lifts suit the job best

Scissor lifts suit work that is repetitive, overhead and mostly vertical. They are a solid fit for internal fit outs, warehouse maintenance, signage, sprinkler work, electrical runs, ceiling repairs and painting. On outdoor sites they are often used for roof edge tasks, facia work, façade maintenance and steel fixing on level surfaces.

They are not the right choice where you need to reach over obstacles or work on uneven ground with deep ruts. For that kind of job you may need a different access machine. In flat industrial parks, completed concrete slabs and well prepared yards though, a scissor lift is efficient and easy to position.

We often supply units to building contractors, maintenance teams, shopfitting crews and industrial plants around Gauteng and the coast. Coastal humidity in Durban and Cape Town can be hard on equipment so we pay close attention to batteries, switches, pins and platform condition before each dispatch.

Power, fuel and site setup requirements

Electric scissor lifts are popular indoors because they run quietly and do not produce exhaust fumes. They usually need battery charging and a level charging point on site, with enough room for the machine to manoeuvre and park. Diesel units are better outdoors where rougher conditions, longer shifts or constant movement make battery power less practical.

Before hire, check the following:

  • Ground is level and firm enough for the machine weight
  • Door heights, lift access and aisle widths are measured
  • Charging point or fuel arrangement is available if required
  • Overhead hazards like beams, pipes and live services are noted
  • Site rules allow the chosen machine type and access route

For load-shedding affected sites, electric units can still work well if charging windows are planned properly. Where needed, we can help with fuel management for diesel units and advise on working hours so the lift is available when your crew needs it most.

Care, servicing and safety on hire

Our hire fleet is checked before dispatch and serviced through our workshop process to keep downtime low. That includes visual inspection, hydraulic checks, battery condition, steering, brakes, controls and safety systems. We also look at tyres or wheels, guardrails, emergency lowering and the general condition of the platform and controls.

On site, the operator should inspect the unit every day before use. Keep the deck clear of loose material, avoid overloading and do not use the lift on slopes or broken ground unless the model and site conditions allow it. If a fault appears, stop work and log it straight away so we can advise on breakdown response or a swop-out if required.

Good care also means planning access to avoid unnecessary movement. The fewer relocations the better, especially on busy projects where other trades are working around the lift and time is tight.

What to check before you book a scissor lift

To make sure you get the right machine first time, please have a few details ready when you send an enquiry through our contact form. The more accurate the information, the easier it is for us to match the lift to the site and organise delivery without delay.

  • Required working height and platform size
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Surface type, slope and access route
  • Power source preference, electric or diesel
  • Hire period, including weekend support if needed
  • Any safety documentation or operator supply needed

If your project runs in stages, long term hire can be arranged with off hire collections and plan changes as the work progresses. For contractors managing several sites at once, our fleet planning support helps keep the right machine in the right place and reduces idle time.

Questions we get asked

Can a scissor lift be used indoors?

Yes. Electric scissor lifts are commonly used indoors because they are quiet and do not give off exhaust fumes, provided the floor is level and able to carry the machine weight.

How do I know which size I need?

Measure the working height, the width of the access route and the platform space you need for workers and tools. If you send those details through the enquiry form, we can suggest the correct unit.

Do you support long projects and weekend work?

Yes. We offer long term hire, weekend support and off-hire collections, which helps when your schedule changes or the site runs after normal hours.
